Twenty fourth beats eleventh, it’s not on the Saudi beating Argentina scale, but tremendous credit to Japan.

Yep, they continued the recent trend of the holders going out in the groups. The incredible South Korea game did it for them, with two very late goals. A win would have taken them through.

To be fair to the Germans though, they reached at least the semis in the previous four world cups!
