  • Danny Gabbidon tweet

"First played against Brighton as a Cardiff player in Div 3. Difference between the two clubs now is huge. Cardiff two brief PL stays. Brighton a clear plan well in advance, of how to get there & stay there. "

Also says we're a bigger club than Brighton and Brentford but only because how we are run.

I'd say we're bigger than both, all other things being equal.

Put us where either club is performance wise and we would prove it too.

Appreciate the sentiment but the difference was far from huge in 2019 when we went there and stuffed them, a result which reignited survival hopes at their expense.

Gabbidon also played Kidderminster, Halifax and Rochdale in Division Three. The difference between us and them is huge

He's right but it's also the case that even if every club appointed the perfect manager, the perfect board, had 51% fan ownership, every stadium was enlarged and played football in the style of the 1970s Brazil team, one team would still finish 92nd in the league and one first.

I really do think things need to change but I don't think all clubs of City's size (of which there are maybe 20...your Bristol City's, Sheff Utds, Portsmouth's, Bolton's, Middlesbrough's, Charlton's of this world) can all expect to be top ten premier league sides.

              Size doesn't matter.

he ended up getting England caps didn't he? think he was one of a handful of Bristol rovers former players who all scored a hateful of goals one season, Marcus Stewart being another

I try to avoid “bigger club” arguments, but we’re a bigger club than Brentford all day long. As for Brighton, I’d put us on a par with them, but, if I had to choose, I’d come down on our side.

What is clear to anyone is that Brentford and Brighton are far better run clubs than us. The huge gap between us and them is partly down to them being examples to others as to how to run a small to medium sized.club to its best advantage, but it’s also partly down to us being so poorly run - in a “basket case” league table of the ninety two, we’d be Champions League qualifier candidates and maybe title contenders.

the main difference is they've identified a long term strategy in how to improve, and trusted their process, even when it wasn't working at times.

Brentford were amongst the smallest clubs in the championship in terms of income and wage bill etc, but they gradually built up their squad to be amongst the best through their recruitment. when they were promoted they had a long term strategy that would take account of them being relegated up to 2 times in the first 5 years, and ensure that they were stronger than when they had been promoted if it happens, so they have a. good chance of going straight back up.

Brighton as well, under potter I think had a really challenging season, where they were generating really good stats (xG etc) but not getting any of the breaks and were in real relegation trouble, but they didn't do the knee jerk thing and change the manager, they stuck with him and it paid off.

I’m sure a lot of clubs have also done a lot worse than us since then as well.

yes he did, but was due to play for Trinidad and Tobago a few years earlier but was injured during a training session the day before his debut

I semi-followed his career as he was very good for BHA when we played them in 92 ( ish ) and I thought he would go onto big things
