Is the Birchgrove a free house ?

Is there any of them left nowadays ?

One of the biggest problems in this country is people using alcohol to socialise

Far better to go to a community cafe and have a few cups of tea and far less hassle
Some people have that ability without the benefit of alcohol and being in Wetherspoons.......

Why don't they drink less alcohol and go for lunch with friends more often ?

Egg and chips and a cup of tea and a chat down Mario's Italian cafe is a lot cheaper than 20 quid on the lager every other lunchtime
Seriously though, they're food is OK. It's cheap but it's far from rubbish. Also you can walk into Wetherspoons anywhere and be certain of getting a pint of beer. The number of times I've walked into a pub and for all the chrome and lit-up glass on the bar, there wasn't a single 'beer' on offfer..

I went to DC with work and found myself coerced into going to an upscale hotel bar with $36 cocktails (plus tip). I scoffed and said, "**** me, you can buy a week's shopping in Lidl for that." Sadly it didn't translate.

I've not tried their food. However, I would rather pay an extra tenner for a fried breakfast than give Timothy Martin even 1 pence of my cash.

              Why?

Their food is what it is. Average, affordable. The fish and chips is genuinely good and the breakfasts really are very good. Some of the buildings are beautiful too and would undoubtedly have fallen into disrepair without the investment, although that does apply to many bars and restaurants.

Obviously it's their range and prices of beers, including from small breweries that is their big sell though. People can argue about whether it's their kind of place but for range, price and quality of beers there really is nowhere comparable.

I think it's just that he doesn't much care for that tw*t Martin. No problem, it's his prerogative. I don't like Martin either but I do use his establishments occasionally when I'm feeling stingy.

Often take the kids for breakfast to the Bevan and is is decent, and under £15 for four of us so can’t complain. Never drink in the places mind, generally £6 a pint wherever I go these days be it the pen and wig, woodville, 3 arches, heath or gwaelod….

Bought 4 drinks in the New Theatre on Monday before watching the Rock Orchestra by candlelight. Wish we had gone to a 'spoons beforehand instead as the 4 drinks (2 pints and 2 prosecco) cost me £37 😲

That Bridgend one is shocking, it was full of tramps last time I was in probably 2012 though, still the same?
