That Newsnight reporter put his arse in a toaster

He looked like a right arsehole with too much cash

Which is exactly what he is

Bought a farm .....so he could charge toffs to shoot pheasants

That ladies and gentleman is your tory tosser and exactly the kind of selfish git that needs to be clobbered by I Tax

Which most of the wealthy farmers have avoided since 1984

                      And they want sympathy 🤣

They can't avoid employer NI so they are kicking off.

If you believe tesco, the world is going to end. How has a large supermarket been able to absorb 10% rises in the min wage but not a small rise in employer NI?
It is an interesting argument, and probably works for Tesco, but there are all sorts of employers who will have an increased NI contribution to make who do not make big profits, excess profits or any profits at all: local authorities, charities, Housing Associations, small businesses screwed by Brexit..... In all these cases the employers NI increase could lead to reduced employee numbers, pressure on wages and increased prices or charges/fees to the public. That does not mean the change is indefensible, but it is a different set of consequences (and easier to do) than from targeting profits (especially what most people would regard as excess profits).

It’s not just a simple as that though is it …. Still it’s going to be great though going forward with higher prices and the impact on the environment with imported product's. Makes another great reason to question the validity of the climate agenda.

Have you seen what they are trying to do with Indian farmers , they are hardly toffs are they !

most farms are worth over £1m, with agricultural land having values from £20k per acre upwards, if you have a 50 acre farm its worth more than £1m.

Now the issue is having to sell off part of the farm to pay IHT, as this creates a situation whereby the large corporate farms that aren't caught by IHT are buying up lots of land in a firesale, whereas the smaller family owned farms are going to be eroded into smaller and smaller parcels over time.

not a good policy at all, and there were better ways to target the large corporate farms

But I agree with you on your main point (wow!). I think the Budget focus should have been on taxing profits - especially excess profits - and not some of the other measures that are bound to wash through to jobs, wages and prices (employer NI etc).

The Starmer government is a typical centrist western Neo Liberal government of the past quarter century and seems happy to look on as a massive wealth transfer takes place from the poor (and some not so poor) to the mega rich. Despite the shallow roots, Starmer's huge majority was an opportunity to introduce radical game-changing policies and Starmer/Reeves opted for status quo fiddling in the budget. The needle nudged slightly on the side of progressive/redistributive but only slightly.

Indeed one can speculate that the farmers here would have been protesting had we not left?!
The UK imports anything between 40-50% of the food its consumes.
