I'm not really sure what people expected? The same fiscal and market pressures that boxed in Liz Truss apply now. Their very narrow definition of "crashing the economy" means that they are only ever a hairs breadth from that themselves. The reality of problems like immigration and housing and the small boats etc are now theirs to deal with and they realize it's much harder in government. Labour are now even talking about third countries themselves, which makes me angry as they should have supported the last govt on it

I do think they deserve some credit for apparently reducing waiting lists, albeit slightly and apparently when compared to a time of a jnr doctors strike, but still. I think he has shown some fairly good diplomatic skills treading difficult territory too. Finally, they do deserve more time of course.

But yeah, life is no better than under the Tories and it was never going to be really.

They cripple the economy and hinder growth, making austerity measures more severe and prolonged. They are realising that Labour lacks an endless supply of money—spending cuts are necessary, and financial support diminishes when economic growth stalls and too many people depend on a shrinking base of taxpayers.

Aside from the preposterous nature of that leading you to call me Tory boy and "Right wing" it's the insults that follow that fk me off. It's completely illogical and toxic.

You did this on the other thread where I posted a BBC article saying the US was negotiating with Ukraine and Russia. An unequivocal fact and a more anodyne article you couldn't find. I don't think we should over egg the pudding in terms of young people's support for Reform. From what I've seen it is at best 20-25% which is obviously only a quarter of them. At the same time it is quite different to UKIP or the Brexit party.

Few things at play I suspect;

1 - People have tried Tories and now Labour and (so far) they taste the same. Labour have to change things to appeal more. If there is a natural rebellious nature to young people then that won't manifest itself in picking the Tories or Labour, it will be seen in Green, Reform, Plaid etc.

2 - Farage, like him or not, is a pretty engaging character and he does have a sense of humour and speaks well. I've seen quite a few light hearted posts from him on tiktok and the like so Reform has obviously tapped into things there

3 - Reform do seem kinda fresh in a sense that UKIP never did. That was all "keep the pound" and the like whereas Reform are more "Sweep the tired old politicians away". They do come across as far fresher than Farages previous parties.

4 - Reform are talking about housing and rightly so. Young people are screwed big time on this and whilst there are many causes, very high immigration absolutely is a big part of it. By (rightly in my opinion) tying it to housing and general quality of life, there will inevitably be some appeal

5 - I think we are past peak "woke". We can all disagree about the word but I think we generally know what we are talking about. Younger people I have spoken to will often mock it. Theyve been at the forefront of censorship at unis and the like and I think there is a genuine feeling that things have gone to far and are a bit joyless, don't like being told what to say and think etc.

6 - Loads of Reform candidates I've seen are pretty young themselves. I think the Humber mayoral candidate is some local boxer in his 20s or something. Again, whatever their image is, "stuffy" most definitely isn't it

But yeah, at the very best I doubt you'll ever get more than one third of 18-24 year olds voting Reform anywhere so let's not over do it. But things do feel different and it's a fact that many populist right parties in Europe are more popular with the young than the old.

You’re right to point out that the numbers supporting them are still pretty small and i don’t think anyone would be batting an eyelid if such figures were recorded for, say, the Greens or Plaid Cymru.

However, one thing I’ve learned in the past decade is the degree of the media’s fascination with the far right -it’s there in the mainstream media, but I find the internet and places like what I’ll always call Twitter really concerning given the lack of regulation on there - we’re creating a real hornet’s nest, not just on the right, and nobody can say with any confidence how it will pan out because we’ve never been here before.

I agree entirely on social media. It's a curse and has been driving people apart for years now. People can just find whatever news they want to back up their own opinion and views slowly become more and more entrenched.
