I don't mind the current Plaid leader tbh and they are a pretty moderate party but I am opposed to Independence. Id rather a clean break (for at least a term) from Labour, which I think will do Welsh democracy a lot of good, but it's not the worst scenario.

There will probably be one Lib Dem who is power broker 😂
I'm opposed to Independence too (Welsh Independence that is). Incidentally I am in favour of British independence from the USA!

However, I agree with Jon; it would be great to see the Greens involved in a big way. It would be a further nail in the coffin of the far right.

Farage jokingly referring to the Welsh language as ‘foreign’ is nowhere near as bad as this prominent LGBTQ+ activist and Plaid Cymru candidate referring to children as ‘cum pets’. Anyone not sickened by this description is clearly morally bereft.

Neil Roberts has apologised for using an offensive term to describe children in a tweet from 2021.

"Cum pets" is a pretty grim term. Doesnt seem like a nice guy but rightly apologises.

Plaid no doubt would demand such behaviour in another party should lead to their removal as a candidate.

              Good grief what an idiot

His opinion that people shouldnt have children if incapable of looking after them is open to debate ..but who knows if one is going to make a good parent until one has kids ....a sort of wise after the event remark really

But the use of that word is appalling and hes got to go

This Plaid kid and the Reform kid.

Now they have both stepped down, am I the only one to have a degree of sympathy here? Their lives entirely changed course perhaps irreversibly. What may have been may well never be with potentially devastating impacts on their well-being and future lives.

This is no defence of what they said, but seeing older men who grew up in an age when they could make youthful mistakes and they weren't recorded and thrown at them years later sits a bit uncomfortably with me. There's a holier than though attitude and I think it's bordering on unreasonable.

These are posts from several years ago - The Reform guys from 7 years ago and the Plaid ones from 5 years ago. The context is totally removed and they have rightly profusely apologised.

To me the suitable response is probably for them to apologise, to learn from it and allow the electorate to decide, like, for example, Justin Trudeau.

I have more sympathy for them than Trump, Starmer, Corbyn, Farage, all the rest of them who get themselves embroiled in scandals with less impact on their careers having been allowed to make mistakes as younger people.

I dunno, Im just not sure in this social media age we have this right. Its not that they shouldn't be reported, it's not that scrutiny isn't valid, I just think it's too high a bar to hold younger people to, who will have said things and done things that many older people will also have done when much younger, the problem being that much of that is now recorded. Its bordering on the puritanical and sits uncomfortably with me, more so than what both of them said/did.

I'm not aware of any scandal Corbyn got embroiled in, pray tell.

However I agree with the rest of your post. It is unfortunate that throwaway gestures or statements made in the effervescence of youth should negatively rebound in a more sober part of life. Like you said, haven't we all performed some silly acts or said some silly things in our youth.

On the other hand, certain continued traits reveal a deeper story. Nigel Farage's awful racist tendencies when in school are indeed revealing.

Nevertheless there should always be room for genuine repentance and we should all be open to forgiveness.

I think these days politics are so deeply divided the various party machines cannot allow damaging revelations to endure because the attacks will be overwhelming.

You know there were scandals and accusations but that aside, it's good to agree.

I think it's a consequence of the digital age, and I think its a reflection of this age and it's impact on wellbeing and mental health in that everything is recorded and relaid. Most often that means a shared text being forwarded on, or an unwanted photo being shared or an inability to switch off due to pressure to be online. In this case it's someone's past biting them on the arse in a way that wouldn't have happened in the past. Despite doing silly things I can't help but feel some sympathy for them both and I hope they are both supported by their respective parties in future

Meanwhile, there’s people like Farage who will make “jokes” that many will find offensive on line as long as you pay him a relatively small sum for it. He should be given no sympathy whatsoever because his actions go the heart of the type of man he is, as does the fact that his actions as a schoolboy forty plus years ago are still remembered by so many he came into contact with back then. The term “morally bereft” was used earlier in the thread by someone trying to defend Farage. That was far funnier than what Farage was paid to say about theWelsh language.

I would be absolutely stunned if between now and the General Election if there aren't multiple racism issues coming to light with Reform candidates. Lets see. What's obvious is the excuses will come out. 1970s comedy reenactments and ex footballers seem the go to.
