Yes a great experience, but personally I feel the " old boys " deserved that experience, they earned it, I think it would have been worse

Thats what our World Cup was a pat on the back for the old guard.

Moore and Johnson up front would scare any side. But like someone else said, the midfield looks a bit threadbare.

The other option is playing older experienced players, not giving younger players game time, then when the older players retire the "youngsters" have absolutely no experience and are pointless playing..

Toshack played youngsters and got slaughtered for doing so yet helped build up a decent pool of players in the process.

I've often heard this said, but I don't really buy it - how much difference would the handful of Wales games a year have made to their development compared to 40 odd league games?
the crop of better players we had were always going to make it

what toshack did do was let us drop into pot 5 for qualifying, with the real.minnows, meaning that qualification was much more difficult even once we started to get a decent squad together

No room for sentiment on football Matt.

A few of them let themselves down. Yes they got us there and they've been excellent for a number of years, but I believe a few know they left a lot over there and will always regret it. Nothing to lose with kids.

Im a sentimental old fool though and believe that if a player is loyal to you ( team / country ) they deserve a little back

Understand your view, but I think far too often it goes the wrong way. We were sentimental with Warnock...Mozza...

The problem with the World Cup was that our squad was well past its peak - we’d allowed ourselves to become too dependent on Bale when we should have been bedding in new players. This should be an ongoing process to keep the production line going and as a result, we’re going to be “off cycle” for a time.
You look at how the top teams operate - they don’t let sentiment get in the way, whereas at the World Cup, the narrative for Cymru was “happy to be there”, which worked at Euro 2016, when the players were 6 years younger.
At least we’ve got that out of our system and can hopefully start thinking like an elite team.

The squad were definitely past its peak but I'm not sure there was much we could have done about that - Bale was an elite player and Ramsey at champions league level - none of the young players coming through would suddenly be at that level now if they'd played a couple of friendlies for Wales. I don't think Gunter or Williams should probably have gone to the world cup on merit, but I don't think it would have made any difference to how it panned out.

Yes he did and we were rubbish for quite a while, but we reaped the benefit eventually with Bale and Ramsey, I don't think we will see players near that quality for another decade or two though.

Bale and Ramsey were both sold for multi million pound deals to top premier league clubs when they were still teenagers - that had nothing to do with anything Toshack did
