  • Has 20mph made our roads safer?

Not according to this link. Sorry it's from Nation.cymru but that doesn't change the data that it contains.

Martin Shipton A group that opposes the default 20mph speed limit in Wales has sought to discredit claims that the change has made roads safer. By the time it closed on March 13 2024, a petition calling for the lower limit to be rescinded had attracted 469,5710 signatures – by far the highest number ever […]

A summary of the graphs for those who can't be bothered with the link. They contain comparisons between the last quarters of 2022 and 2023, so the 2023 data is after the 20mph limits were introduced.

Deaths on roads 30mph and lower: 8 in 2022 and 7 in 2023, so 1 fewer in 2023. As many deaths on 20mph roads as there were in 2022 on 30mph roads.

Serious injuries: down from 120 in 2022 to 105 in 2023.

Seriously injured motorcyclists and cyclists: up from 52 to 65 in 2023.

None of this comes as a surprise to me. Has it been worth it? Not at all.

I’d love to see the insurance claims for minor bumps, since the 20mph came into force

Around towns and villages, probably. Around schools? Most were in 20mph limits anyway and rightly so.

Can't pin that one on Drakeford if you know what you're talking about. This was Lee Waters baby all the way through, then he stepped down after it was implemented. Blame him.

Seems a bit early to be making statistical analysis ?

I think people have just gone back to their usual speeds in the main. Cardiff is slow anyway as there’s lights every 200 ft so barely any point. From what I can gather there’s been more accidents as people are watching their speedo ins tread of the road. There were barely any fatalities anyway in 30 zones. It wasn’t done for safety anyway, just another deluded control freak.

He's the boss, it would be like blaming the kit man for our defeats.

Nonsense. I know you don't like him but no leader decides everything. There's a reason for things like the House of Commons, Senedd etc is that elected members vote on things. Even Tories voted for 20mph. It would be entirely fair to blame Labour for 20mph, same as blaming the Tories for things in Westminster - I wouldn't blame Sunak for decisions a party makes.

Surely we need to go down to 10mph if 20mph isn't working?
