  • Something that puzzles me

Why do so many of this board’s contributors put spaces between punctuation marks and the words that precede them?

    Some examples:

Would Kieffer Moore have been a good signing ? Would he score goals in this team ?

Of course , he would have been a great signing ! He always scores goals !

Maybe , but the system this manager uses might not have suited him .

You must be joking , right ? He scores regularly at this level . We need a striker like him !

Some of my favourite posters do this, as do some of my least favourite. Some of the people I consider to be CCMB’s cleverest contributors do it, as do some of its stupidest.

Everyone who puts a space between a punctuation mark and the word that precedes it must read books, newspapers, magazines, other websites, etc. Therefore, they must surely notice the way they use punctuation marks differs from the way professional writers use them, but they continue to do it differently anyway. I find that strange and it’s something that has puzzled me for a long time.

I should point out that the incorrect use of punctuation marks doesn’t bother me as such. I just find it curious that so many posters on this board do it so regularly because I can’t say I’ve noticed it happening elsewhere on social media with such regularity.

Having never seen this before I've just scrolled through some of the longer threads and found one poster that does it.

Not sure if he falls into the cleverest or least stupidest category.

    Cough* SF.

I look forward to the moment we have some more transfer activity . :hehe:

My Grammarly has put a red line under activity . Scratching my head as to why .

I used to use Grammarly at work and encouraged my colleagues to use it as well. However, since retiring I'd forgotten about it, but have just installed it on my phone. It's fixed your post for you 😄

I think i always space the ? from the preceding word but as you are aware, I'm no writer or reader it's a bad habit from yesteryear, i think it looks better and makes easier reading so don't bother to correct it, when writing procedures at work i usually run the spell and grammar tool and adjust accordingly especially if the procedure has to go for external review/approval.

Off topic but similar, i associate the word "wee" with the scots however here in Belfast it seems far more used than i recognise from my time in Scotland, last night I took Doris for a wee meal, on a wee table, with a wee bottle of wine and a wee bottle of Peroni but followed with large gin & tonic!!!

That's a given where you're concerned. You can't even manage to string a basic sentence together, let alone punctuate one properly. Indeed, you appear to have developed an entirely new language. But that's certainly not the case with some of the others on this board who use punctuation marks in this manner. Unlike your good self, they aren't thick.

I've got a number of colleagues based in Belfast who use that word on a regular basis, but my colleagues in Glasgow and Aberdeen rarely do.

And why do some put Shirley instead of surely.??? As if it's funny. When it's as annoying as those driving around with Dad's Taxi etc in their cars.

The space between the last letter and say the exclamation mark, seems too narrow, e.g.

                          goals! or goals !

I think the latter has greater effect. There's no correct grammatical rule for printed/typed writing, and I would think that if one was writing by hand it would be closer to the latter example..

How do you know I don't ? I can't remember a conversation with you stating that ! Also , I'm dyslexic so I could be doing it without being aware for all you know
