Whatever happened to the usual managers comment that they never speak about another club’s player? Why would he say anything unless the player has already signed for us?

I think there are a number of possibilities:

1) He’s inexperienced and a bit naive.

2) He’s a bit thick.

3) He wants to project an image of being a genuine Championship manager who’s at the centre of transfer negotiations.

4) All of the above.

confirms why I just said that there had been "discussions" regarding Ricky Jade-Jones - discussions with who? When I watchwed the video yesterday, I thought "he's not really sayin g anything there", the discussion s coujld be with Peterborough and/or the player or they could be with the City hierarchy as to whether they could afford him. There's even a hint that Jade-Jones is being used to divert attention away from real targets.

Can't help thinking that if someone like Warnock had said what's in that BBC artiocle, there would be people claiming he's being shrewd, but, because Riza is an inexperienced manager, people feel he's just being an idiot.

Can you recall Warnock naming another club's player is similar circumstances?

Perhaps he’s read this M.B, and he’s completely comfortable with the fact that fans are acutely aware that transfers are negotiated weeks or even months in advance before that are officially announced :hehe:


Premier League rules state that “a player under contract shall not directly or indirectly make any approach to another club without having obtained the prior written consent of the existing club to who he is contracted.”

Basically, that all transfer deals should be started from scratch.

Reality, of course, is different. Rarely will a bid be submitted for a player, without the buying club having contacted the player’s representatives to see if he would be interested in a move, and if so what kind of wages he would be after.

Frowned upon? Certainly, but it is pretty much common practice across the game.

The bulk of a deal is often set up before a fee has been agreed between the buying and selling clubs

Can you recall Warnock naming another club's player is similar circumstances?

I’ve read claims on here when Bulut was manager that interest in a certain player may have been putout as a smokescreen to keep people from identifying who our real targets were.

I think there are times when revealing who you are after is very counterproductive, and other times it can help you get the result you wanted.

Seems like our interest in RJJ was already out there, and Peterborough are probably looking to cash in as he's out of contract in the summer.

the story / rumour we were looking at Jade-Jones was out before Riza mentioned him I thought, so once its out, its no secret

Maybe the club wants lots of names mentioned so that if none of them sign for us they can say "well look at all the players we tried to bring in".

When I was driving home last night Barry Fry was on radio 5 talking about Peterborough’s upcoming FA cup game away to Everton. He said they had a young team who were struggling this season but the young lads could make a name for themselves at Everton and seal a multi million pound deal for themselves and the club and he specifically mentioned Ricky Jade Jones saying if he scored in such a game it would significantly increase his price
