The season before Kane signed for Bayern (22/23), their top scorer was Serge Gnabry with 14 goals.

Isn’t it weird how the top teams score so many goals when they sign the best strikers? Freaky, really. It’s almost as if the two things are related.

Nothing to do with them not having an out and out centre forward that season, the first post Lewandowski, so they shared the goals around more evenly. Nothing at all.

Do the players reach an agreement among themselves before a season starts as regards who will score goals?

"Top teams" being your most pertinent observation. Bayern scored 92 goals in season 22/23 and 94 the following season with Harry Kane in the side. Isn't it weird how the top teams score so many goals no matter who plays for them? It's almost like being a top team and scoring 90-odd goals a season are related.

Of course. The nice ones do anyway. Anything else would be ungentlemanly.

I don't understand the point you're making (sorry) it's probablt because i'm a bit dull, but you said " No matter who plays for them" (Top teams) Are you saying that Salech (for example) could score a lot of goals if he was playing for Bayern? apologies if i've got that wrong.

No, but in the first season post Lewandowski and with no recognised centre forward they clearly had to adapt to a different way of playing until Kane come in as a direct replacement for him.

So whilst you might try and make it sound like a negative that their top league scorer only had 14 before Kane come along it certainly didn’t negatively affect the total number of Bundesliga goals they scored in a season. They still scored 90+ in line with other seasons and in fact scored more goals from open play and less penalties than the season Kane arrived.

It’s bizarre. What’s even more bizarre is a team like Bayern paying so much money for a player like Kane. Why bother? Couldn’t they just arrange to share the goals out among the rest of the players? Or maybe just sign a striker who is much, much cheaper?

Apologies. I was assuming top teams/top players was a given. No, I don't think that Salech would score a lot of goals for Bayern. He might score more than he does for us though. Who knows?

And it worked. They won the league. So why did they bother signing Kane? What could a flat track bully like him possibly bring to the table?

I’ve been watching football for 50 years but I’ve never really understood it, or at least not in the way that a genuine expert like you clearly does.

I always thought that big clubs like Bayern paid big money for players like Kane because those players either had the potential to be really good, or had already proven they were really good. But I think I’ve probably been wrong all along. Maybe they just sign golden boot winners and record-breakers for tax purposes.

I'm not sure, but I don't think that's how it works. My point is merely that Kane has made little difference to the amount of goals Bayern score. That's just a fact. There's nothing I can do about it. Sorry.

Paid all that money, didn’t really increase their goal output massively and going through quite a lean spell trophy wise for them. Even managed to lose a 1 horse race when Kane arrived.

But hey, he’s won the fastest to 100 goals in the top 5 leagues trophy. Im sure Uli Hoelness will be delighted.

That’s OK. You sound as clueless as me. I always believed strikers who set top-level goalscoring records must be really good, but apparently that’s not the case. It really is a funny old game.
