Re: The Transfer Rumour Thread ( Winter 2025)

BBM has changed the way we play for the better nqat. It’s been refreshing but why can’t he sort out the defence and the number of goals we give up because we’re not tight enough in defence. Stevenage had their two centre back lumps who didn’t get past their own 18 yard box. I’m not saying that’s what we should do but I’m genuinely concerned that we don’t seem to be changing anything to sort this problem because it will be an even bigger problem later in the season and next season if we’re in the Championship we will get taken to the cleaners.

My thinking is that we could tighten up the defence, but would that be at the cost of what we’ve got on the attacking front? People also talk about us playing with two forwards, but that extra striker has to come from somewhere and so would that mean our midfield and/or attacking play is affected?

We play in a very open manner at home and, so far at least, we have the attacking players to come up with at least one more goal than the opposition, but it tends to get ignored that we have one of the best goals against records in the division - our away goals against record is very good, in fact it was the best in the division than last time I looked.

We are ranked number one for away goals conceded, but nineteenth for home goals conceded. A strange record indeed.

For all the talk about the defence, only 5 clubs have conceded fewer goals than Cardiff this season whilst also being the top scorers as well as the most clean sheets

Thing is, we're all so used to watching Championship football.

Each and every one of us has seen how fragile our defence has looked on numerous occasions this season. The big difference is that most League One attacks simply aren't good enough to take advantage. The finishing at this level is often woeful. On the whole, City haven't defended particularly well. Our record has been OK by current League One standards and having an outstanding goalkeeper in fine form has been a big factor. But most of us realise we'd get roasted in the Championship next season if we got promoted and continued to defend in the same manner.

We're in a weird position where we don't have a particular position or area that's crying out for demand, so it's difficult to really suggest anything other than reinforcements. I'd like cover for Bagan personally, as he's our only reliable LB option. Another winger with pace would be nice to get balls early into the striker, as we're not the most pacey team. A dependable midfielder wouldn't go amiss either.

Like I said, there's nothing really crying out to be replaced though, I'd say only the Bagan cover would be more than a suggestion.

I thought Crew looked good the other week, but he’s not getting in ahead of Wintle, Robertson or Turnbull.

I think it would be more of a long term view regarding Crew . Wintle's contract runs out in June 2026

I thought about this a little more, and I think transfer wise, primarily the summer should be on two things.

1: Preparing for sales. I highly doubt Lawlor will be sold in January, but the summer could see an offer too good to pass up. With that, we need to make sure we can scout for someone with Lawlor's profile in a CB position.

2: Keeping an eye on our aging players. Wintle and Robinson have done nothing wrong, but we have also got to futureproof. Poor Eli King has probably missed the most decisive year of his development, and I'd love for us to have a monster in the CDM role for years to come. That's again more a summer window thing than a January window one though. We need to make sure we can have someone ready to go if older players peak and fade out, which is not easy to predict.

He's still got mileage in him, I just want to make sure we can develop something special in the role for the long-term. Huge shame about King's injury, should have been his season, but Wintle has done an excellent job.
