  • Magic muchrooms

I had a conversation a few weeks back with a surly and relatively reclusive young man who is a relative of my partner and I mentioned to him that he seemed to be more communicative in recent months. He told me that he thinks that magic mushrooms had given him more of a communion with nature (my words, not his) and had made a huge difference to his life recently.

Having only had one experience with hallucogenics (a mate having spiked my Newcastle Brown with LSD in the New Moon club in the late seventies) I listened to him with interest - and last night there was a talk on such things by an expert* in Bridgwater that I attended.

It seems that psilocybin is at the extreme end of the drug spectrum in that harm against others is practically zero (alcohol being at the other extreme in that category) and that self-damage was minimal and overdosing almost impossible, if I remember rightly. Many of you hip dudes on here will know far more about the subject than me, of course.

As it's classed as a Cat A drug it's illegal to even pick the mushrooms in a field, which seems a strange, serious crime.
And now to my question (at last, they holler!), has anyone on here heard of anyone being arrested for such a thing.

Imagining the plod hiding in the bushes and dragging people down the nick and it resulting in a criminal record (which may jeopardise job opportunities and some foreign travel) seems rather harsh.

*An expert in the field perhaps :-)

Sludge is an expert on this topic, but alas he’s on the naughty step on this site.

You can't really be arrested for picking mushrooms unless you go up to the police and say "I'm collecting psilocybin mushrooms to make stuff with".

As someone who has used them to deal with treatment-resistant depression in the past, they come with both good and bad, and I'd recommend against overuse as I once did because it can really mess up your nervous system regulation and make things feel more intense than they ought to be. So something that's a 3/10 stress level can end up being an 8/10, and something that's 8/10 stress can feel like you're having a heart attack. They can be used positively in moderation, and I encourage their use as a potential means to treat depressive disorders, however, they're not candy and can have long-lasting neurological effects, especially if overused.

After a bad trip, I stopped all narcotics.
Micro dosing seems quite popular now though.

I know a few people who swear by them, and if you have certain types of poor mental health, or are struggling with communication or socialising I can well believe they would help some people. On the other hand they will probably not be helpful for an equal number of people.

Like most things in life I guess, things in moderation and if you can control when you choose to take them aren't always bad.

What’s the neurological thingies from overuse?

Probably the most terrifying experience of mine and a few of my friends when we overdosed on them. We would all have been very familiar with many drugs as youngsters . We made some mushroom soup and just kept putting another handful of mushrooms ( one for the pot ) Started tripping when we headed out to the pub , by the time we got there the road was moving under my feet . Got into the pub and it was the most frightening place I had ever been (although I didnt know what I was afraid of ) .Any way I headed home and sat with my partner for hours , absolutely petrified , of what ? My imagination I guess . I wasn't generally the sort to be afraid of much as a youngster.
Some of the others had much worse experiences that night. One stripped off in his front garden ran down the road screaming , terrified ..
That said , if you are sensible with them they are supposed to be quite good for you ..I am led to believe they are very popular with youngsters in small doses.
I perhaps should add I haven't taken any drugs other than the very popular alcohol for many a ye

They're legal in a couple of states here. And there are several "churches" that are able to distribute them and their associated products. My ex-wife owns one.

I had a really bad experience with mushroom products around fifteen years ago and haven't dabbled since, I was stood looking out onto a field and there were about a dozen smurfs moving around in the distance, one of them was huge and appeared to be made of jelly, his face looked like one of those cabbage patch kids from the 80's, as he approached me at speed one of the other lads I was with turned to me and said "he's going to be a great signing for us".. turns out I was only eating a chicken and mushroom pie and watching John Parkin warming up before the game.
