Re: Capitol centre
Austin Reed was originally on Queen street opposite the Capitol, it got ram raided by the docks boys.
It later moved to the Capitol opposite, where I bought my Timberlands in 1992.
I still have them and give them a wear every now and then.

Re: Capitol centre
For once, you are correct. I had no idea NYCBlue was talking about Austin Reed when he said: "Is that posh, boring, men's store still down that end? I can't remember name," However, my reply was: "I don’t know which store you’re referring to, but the answer is definitely no."Originally posted by Henry Hill View PostNice try but you had no idea he was talking about Austin Reed so you were not “right” at all.
Uber confident in your smug know-it-all way that there was no “posh shops” that end of town until told otherwise and told Flannels was in Churchill Way.
And I was correct. There is no posh, boring men's store at the end of Queen Street or in the Capitol . The one that was there closed at least a decade ago. Apparently, there is a shop I'd never heard of called Flannels that operates on Churchill Way, but that's not a boring men's store and it's not the shop NYCBlue was referring to. So, once again, you attempted to make me look foolish, but only succeeded in making a fool of yourself.
What possible motivation is there for vacuous non-entities like you to do what you do, I wonder? You never add anything whatsoever to any discussion or debate on this message board. All you ever do is fire insults (personal or general) at other contributors under a cowardly cloak of anonymity.
I genuinely pity you. It must be seriously frustrating to have so little in your life you get your kicks in this way.

Re: Capitol centre
Disney store and H&M were probably two of the more popular stores there, along with the Littlewoods catalogue shop.Originally posted by Optimistic Nick View PostThe gadget shop and virtual reality were in there, two of the best stores in town for a kid. And yeah a virgin. And a Jaeger later I think. Used to have some nice shops. Did it have a food hall too? Or was that queen's west? And yeah there was an odeon in there. I hadn't realised that had closed actually.
But I loved virtual reality. Little computer games shop. They had a virtual reality headset game thing, which was pretty incredible for 1992 or whenever it was.
Sad to see what it's become, but it's inevitable really. I fear the high street is in terminal decline and on top, the centre of town has shifted away from there.
Didn't Beatties have one of those VR games/pods as well?

Re: Capitol centre
Wasn't beatties a shop for subbuteo, Hornby, airfix, and those little pots of paint? I don't think it had a vr headset thing. The one in virtual reality was huge. It had its own floorspace, and you sort of walked around with the headset on. I was about 10, I had no idea what was going on but it was still incredibly futuristic.Originally posted by nomad blue View PostDisney store and H&M were probably two of the more popular stores there, along with the Littlewoods catalogue shop.

Someone mentioned Athena. I thought that was upstairs in there, but then my memory is getting stuff mixed up because I thought there was an upstairs food court in the capitol too, but I'm not sure that's right. Not that it mattered. The cafe in BHS was the only place I'd want to eat as a kid anyway.

Re: Capitol centre
Yes I remember that. Spud U Like and a noodle place I seem to recall.Originally posted by insider View PostThere was originally an upstairs food court in the capitol.
Before the Capitol wasnt there also a food court in an arcade at the top end of Queen Street? Opposite where the Queen Street arcade is now? Think JJB later had the whole upstairs unit but seem to recall an arcade in there with an American sports apparell shop and have a hazy memory of there being a food court in there too.
