This thread has taken a bizarre turn....

Yes, Paul. I do believe that if Newport County and Bristol Rovers were challenging us at the top of League One, the crowds for games against those teams at the CCS would be decent.

I also believe that if Swansea City and Bristol City were challenging us at the top of League One, the crowds for games against those teams at the CCS would be decent.

The problem is, Newport and Bristol Rovers are desperately trying to avoid relegation from League Two, while Swansea and Bristol City are sitting mid-table in the Championship. However, for the avoidance of doubt, I do indeed think that if things were different in the EFL, different things would happen.

18k average in L1 is significantly higher than any average as a City fan since I've been a supporter at that level.

Be fair though, since City were last at this level we’ve moved to a new stadium, been to an FA Cup final, a League Cup final and a Championship play-off final, we’ve been promoted to the Premier League twice and spent 20 seasons (or whatever it was) in the second tier.

Different times indeed. It’s a very different club now. We even had a different-coloured kit for a while, but we don’t talk about that.

              I agree.

But there's also Sky TV. Virtually all mid week games live.

In our case a significant amount of the support is outside Cardiff.

Easier sometimes to stay at home and watch on TV.

Presumably it’s easier to stay home and watch TV in Bolton and Bradford too.

We’re third in the average attendances behind Bolton and Bradford. Today Bolton played Blackpool and have a derby with Wigan as well as plenty of matches with teams from neighboring Yorkshire - Stockport are close by as well. Bradford have four Yorkshire derbies, so, as you say yourself, we’d have a higher average attendance if we had a few derbies. Therefore, to an extent, we are paying for a fixture list that would have no really attractive looking fixtures compared to previous seasons.

Our crowds are alright. The issue - if there is one - is that our grounds is actually pretty big so the crowds look poor.

This "policy" of counting all season tickets irrespective of whether they attend also gives a false impression anyway, our average crowd is probably a good 1000 below what is stated
Yeah I agree that the actual numbers are not realistic to compare directly. Those crowds at the time felt massive as the sleeping giant was finally awake

475k people within 10km of the CCS
568k people within 10km of the Reebok (or whatever it’s called these days)
687k people within 10km of Valley Parade

2.5k difference between the 3 teams isn’t massive and it wouldn’t take much to change.

What’s the average numbers for away fans at Bolton and Bradford? Higher than at the CCS I’d imagine, Wigan took 3.5k to Bolton, last month here was maybe 300-400. Barnsley had 1.3k at Bolton and ~150 in Cardiff.

I would’ve hoped we’d be over 20k by now, we’ll certainly end the season on 20k+, but we also didn’t haemorrhage fans like some expected. Last season people were predicting crowds of 11k or 12k which thankfully didn’t come true.

Crowds will only increase with promotion, hopefully 21k or 22k next season and keep the feel good factor going.

Of the 687k who live within 10km of Valley Parade, 90% support Leeds :hehe:

Bolton's about 10 miles from Manchester as the crow flies. They're fairly important pieces of info

Bradford have done an incredible job of tapping into the local population to try to make everyone in the city a fan, and they're doing a great job, and they've got a lot more competition on their doorstep. The proximity of other clubs does help with away attendances.

Bradford are also at their highest position in 20 years and we’re at our lowest.

Like I said, I would’ve liked 20k+ but I don’t think 19k is bad. The fact it’s 3rd highest and not far behind 1st or 2nd suggests it’s a decent level to be at.

If we were averaging 22k but Bolton and Bradford were on 25k would people still be disappointed we were 3rd? Or would 22k be past the threshold for being disappointed?

However I will be disappointed if we go up and don’t see any noticeable increase, that would suggest to me the club have cocked up in some capacity and missed out on the feel good factor promotion brings. Whether that’s raising prices, not backing the manager, changing the kit/badge….

I’d imagine the fair weather fans will come out once the evenings are lighter and it’s not raining. It is disappointing, but people that think we should be getting 25,000 plus in League One severely underestimate our fanbase.

That’s not really relevant as there are so many other clubs within 20/30 km up north, there are virtually none for us. I reckon if we carry on and get promoted we will average about 22 which is very good considering the last few years of mis-management and decline. What are the jacks averaging? 16? With 1000’s of ST not showing up to over the last few months
