Re: Have our home crowds been disappointing?

Cardiff City have topped the divisional attendance rankings on four occasions:

    1946/47 - Third Division (South)
    1992/93 - Division 3
    1998/99 - Division 3
    2000/01 - Division 3

Back in 1946/47, City’s average attendance was far bigger than the largest in Third Division (North), so effectively it was the only season in which the club has had the biggest average in the third tier (Division 3 was the fourth tier in 92/93, 98/99 and 00/01).

If you’d told me back in July that we’d be in the position we are now in February and we’d have been top of the table or thereabouts since August, then given the clubs that are in League One this season, I’d have been confident we’d be topping the division’s attendance rankings.

The fact that we aren’t is obviously no big deal, but it has surprised me.

Lincoln home. 12.30 ko , just over 2,000 away fans.

      What do we reckon?

I think 21k. I think if that game doesn't get 20k plus then thats a disappointment.

I first started going in Ashursts promotion season. Im fairly certain the 2nd game I went to was Lincoln home.

Im not sure of the crowd that day but it would have been comfortably below 10k maybe even less than 8k. Times have definitely changed. I think the promotion game v Orient was only around 10k.

There is no way our fan base turns into a 25k crowd for Lincoln home.

Re: Have our home crowds been disappointing?

We had just over 22,000 for the Bradford game in September and the Exeter game on Boxing Day.

Lincoln should undoubtedly see our biggest crowd of the season so far, but who knows?

His segregation is the main issue obviously……..

I just don’t think we have as big a committed fanbase as we think we do.

Segregation is no issue whatsoever in a 32k stadium with an 18k average.

Why some 55 year old plus men are moaning they cant sit by the away fans which has an effect on the atmosphere is embarrassing.

Im sure if we could attract a 30k crowd v Lincoln there would be very little Segregation. As there will be thousands of empty seats it makes sense to not sell the block close to them.

              Agree about your 2nd point.

Reckon it would be far better as an evening game, either Friday or Saturday…..I always think an early gives the away team an advantage as the place is even more of a morgue than usual 3pm. Guess the club don’t care

I don't think the club have a choice do they?

It didn't give us much of an advantage yesterday.🤣

I haven’t been to home park for ages, I can imagine it was a bit more of an event with the league leaders in town, it’s not a massive ground and was probably nearly full?

In fact, it was a very impressive 27,280. However, last night’s game saw a big drop to just 16,663. I wonder if any other club at this level has had such a dramatic rise and fall in attendances in recent times? Possibly, but I doubt it.

The crowds for our last three games were:

                          18,028 v Wimbledon
                          27,280 v Lincoln (up by 9,252)
                          16,663 v Wycombe (down by 10,617)

It was another night on which our crowd was significantly lower than both Bradford’s and Bolton’s:

                          19,716 - Bradford v Mansfield
                          19,570 - Bolton v Doncaster
                          16,663 - Cardiff v Wycombe

The top three League One averages are now as follows:

                          21,497 - Bolton
                          20,501 - Bradford
                          19,376 - Cardiff

Re: Have our home crowds been disappointing?

                            Transport and geography (home fans)

For Cardiff City F.C., public transport is a strong one and often underestimated.

The stadium (Cardiff City Stadium) isn’t badly located in itself, but the rail network in South Wales is quite radial and limited late at night. If you’re coming from the Valleys or further west, getting home after an evening match can be awkward or outright impossible without a car. That creates a real barrier for:
                            • midweek fixtures
                            • families
                            • younger fans without transport

So yes—if a noticeable chunk of the fanbase lives in those areas, attendance will naturally fluctuate depending on kickoff time and fixture importance.

                            2) Local affluence

That also tracks. Compared to some English regions, parts of South Wales have:
                            • lower average incomes
                            • higher travel costs relative to wages
                            • competing financial priorities

                            3) Away support comparison (Bolton / Bradford)

Clubs like Bolton Wanderers F.C. and Bradford City A.F.C. benefit from:
                            • denser clusters of nearby grounds (especially in the North/ Midlands)
                            • shorter travel distances → cheaper and easier trips for visiting fans
