I wasn’t bothered about keeping him at the end of last season, this season he’s been excellent
Maybe BBM just sees it for what it was, a great season at this level.

I’ve no doubt Wintle will have another great season in League One this year
He’ll do a good job for a top team in that league

I thought he’d done enough for a new contract, but maybe BBM thinks he’s got a better player lined up

He was the Players’ Player of the Season in League One. It’s a level at which he seems to be above average. Based on all the evidence we’ve seen since he joined the club, the same can’t be said for the Championship.

Players player is just an internal popularity contest. Nice to win of course but is it really that important? This is the championship and they are highly paid professionals not the local pub team,

Pretty sure BBM has the lads on side and isn’t exactly in Arne Slot territory, I don’t think he will lose the dressing room over this decision.

I can’t say I disagree with this. As mentioned above he’s 29, never performed well at Championship level, and stood out in a very poor division this season. Having said that, I’d rather Wintle over David Turnbull or Charlie Savage.

When BBM sidelined Alnwick, plenty of fans were surprised. Many thought he’d be fine and Trott was a strange signing. He turned out to be much better than Alnwick, who was ordinary at best.

City signed Wintle because he’d been doing well in League One. He did well in League One again this season. In between, he was ordinary in the Championship at best.

Wintle’s 29 next month. The chances of him improving at the next level are slim at this stage of his career. I reckon he’d be a back-up option at best for any club that wants to progress in the Championship.

It’s a brave move by BBM under the current circumstances but an encouraging one. It amazes me that so many City fans apparently can’t appreciate just how poor League One was this season. The Championship will be a whole lot tougher and City will need to be a good bit better.
110% agree with this! (And this poster for once)

I think that fans should embrace Barry Murphy's thinking, and trust him on this one, i for one most certainly do.

I think the gilf between league one and the championship is getting as big as the championship to the prem.

The 4 teams in the play offs are dire. They all did their best to miss out on them, Bolton didn’t even win 20 games ffs and of those 19 they won.a quarter of them were in injury time.

                    Re: Wintle Gone!

he was in Vegas with the Boys recently, and has just come back from Majorca for a family holiday with Kieffer Moore

He must have been told a while back and perhaps to soften the situation they hopefully will announce Bagan shortly?

                      Re: Wintle Gone!

Always sad to see a player leave who has represented the club a while, especially one who gives his all, however, I think it is the right decision to release Wintle.
Perhaps a one year contract offer could have been made but I'd like to think BBM has someone in mind to replace him, someone who can make us perform better at a higher level for a longer period of time.

Joe Ralls was in a similar position where had come to the end of the road for us and I think that, even though Wintle had a good season for us this season, it is completely understandable that he has suffered the same fate.

I wish him all the best for the future.

He may well do but I doubt one who has much ambition.

Fair enough. I still think it's a bit patronising. It's been an enjoyable season but I didn't think anyone was under the misapprehension that we've been up against quality opposition.

I think BBM's thinking is that he has someone lined up and keeping Wintle will simply block King and Mafico's path to the first team. We want to be developing these youngsters.

It's a shame as he was excellent this season but I don't think he'd be the right decision to be a starter for us in the Championship.

I guess 6 is the one place where we are stacked in

                              J.Collwill
                              Robertson
                              Turnbul
To a lesser extent Mafico, Eli King and even Chambers can play there

You have to feel sorry for Wintle based on his performances last season, but not though on the previous four.

Defensive midfield is a position for which we desperately needed to recruit a more mobile and physical player. With next to nobody out of contract and still a relatively large squad I fully understand the decision to released Wintle

Whether it proves to be the correct decision will depend on whom is signed to replace him. But I'm presuming that they will be a step up in quality.
