Bloody hell. Really positive signing one day, head coach sacked the next day. Upheaval par for the course at glammy over recent years.

          Good news?

Welsh Fire can become a "global brand" with the help of IT entrepreneur Sanjay Govil after his "landmark" investment in The Hundred franchise, according to Glamorgan.

Interesting article on it by Michael Atherton here: https://www.thetimes.com/sport/crick...rton-t0506qst2 (Non-paywall version here: https://archive.ph/ercSr)

I don't know the ins and outs of the relationship but surely Glamorgan would benefit from any financial growth and success that Welsh Fire have, and the owners seem very bullish about that. Although he does acknowledge some of the big barriers to Glamorgan's long-term success.

On a side note, I'd be tempted to watch a few more Welsh Fire games if they could attract the likes of Travis Head, Glenn Maxwell, and Rachin Ravindra.

                  ,

Thanks for posting that, it gives me a better understanding of what's involved and makes me feel a bit better about the half sale - I'm glad we're still nothing to do with the IPL.

I'm not sure cricket has ever been that big in Wales or that it ever will be, but there is talent in Wales and I've always thought that the absence of Glamorgan players from England teams in the last twenty years has as much to do with the selectors seemingly getting lost on the rare occasions they cross the Severn Bridge. Forget about senior England sides, Glamorgan players don't even get picked for things like England A teams - I'm convinced that, somewhere along the way, someone like Kiran Carlson would have got picked for at least one England A tour if he played for any other county.

This deal only widens what was already a pretty large gap between Glamorgan and Gloucestershire and Somerset when it comes to the whole One Hundred franchise team for the area and, if I were a supporter of one of those sides, I'd feel even less inclined to class the Welsh Fire as "my team".

His response to that was interesting: "It’s called Welsh Fire and we own 50-odd per cent of it, so that ship has sailed a little bit. All the non-hosts have been very well compensated and have a carried interest in future sales as well."

That said, if the Hundred really does grow in the way its stakeholders seem to think it will, I wouldn't be surprised if more "franchises" are added later.

If that is true it really is amazing.
I might well be in the minority here but the "Welsh Fire" playing cricket leaves me cold.
I suppose we get to see some world class cricketers perform for "our" team but isn't it all about the razzmataz and money?

The youngsters may well buy into it and that's probably the target audience but to me, well it's just not cricket.
