      Thats him

There was a lot of talk about the liberals and if they had got 10 more seats they could have formed a coalition with labour

But clegg wanted power , did a deal with the Tories and a lot of their voters have never forgiven them as they are very anti Conservative, as much if not more than labour

Re: Lib Dems win North Shropshire.

Undoubtedly a huge defeat for Boris et al - even Dowden struggled on the TODAY programme this morning. However I feel sorry in a way for the Liberals as these results always bring about delusions of grandeur on the part of their leader, as with Ed Davey this time round. With the electoral system we have (first past the post) they have no chance.

Wow, I was not expecting that.
I think the tories had about 65% of the vote the last time round, one of the safest tory seats in the country.

Huge pressure on Boris Johnson after this, we could well see a vote of no confidence early in the new year.

              Absolutely

And when the public were given the opportunity to get the voting system changed a bit , to the alternative vote , they bottled it

The only way for the liberals to get decent representation is either a coalition with labour or a new party to represent both Labour and Liberal voters

Usual caveats on byelections, but this is a stinging defeat and the Tories cant ignore it. A problem all of Boris' making too, as Owen Paterson would have served his 30 day suspension now.

He needs to rapidly shake things up, be strict on those who attended parties and tell us how we quickly get out of covid again or its time for him to move on.

The scale of the defeat is quite something. I thought the Lib Dems may scrape it but 6,000 votes - wow.

Thats not true. All of the top voted comments are criticising the tories, politicians, liars etc etc etc.

Senior Conservatives vented fury at the PM after a stunning turnaround saw the Lib Dems seize North Shropshire, a true-blue stronghold for nearly two centuries, by a margin of 6,000.

Rock solid Tory seat with a massive Leave majority in 2016 - it shows how much the sleaze and contempt stories from the past few weeks have finally cut through with voters. Johnson's teflon coating is peeling off.

Absolutely. It has cut through. Important to say that in a byelection people can give them a kicking without 'risking' (from their perspective) another government but the scale of the defeat will shock many tories

Tories deserved that wacking , we may now see a more radical Tory of party of old , unlike this centralist based one

                              Things could actually get worse.

Who replaces the bufoon.? His front bench are a complete joke.

100 backbench loons - no thanks.

Saw Question Time last night the Tory on there was leathered by Lisa Nandy and the audience who at one stage laighed at him. The area has 3 Tory MPs. Sadly several pointed out they were not Labour Voters but ripped him. 1 said theyd voted Tory but was backing Nandy. You just get the feeling come crunch time they will loyally back the blue rosette.

Cummings is a complete pr!ck but he was right when he said its shocking that Johnson and Corby were the standard of leader.

Starmer said weve got the worst leader at the worst time.

Its worse weve the most useless government at the worst time.

Its not just Boris. Raab , Patel , Coffey , Whateley , Williamson , Hancock should lose his seat for his behaviour.

Having worked in the Trade Marks side of Intellectual Property, I can recognise a good one when I see it and "Boris" is a very effective trademark, because it's not what he's called by closest friends and family;-

BORIS JOHNSON will take over as Prime Minister on Wednesday after a landslide victory to take Tory leadership. But his real name might surprise you.

His family call him Al, and frankly, I don’t see why we should call him Boris either. It plays into this notion that he is a jolly, gentle, teddy bear of a character

Maybe it's wishful thinking, but I think I detect less use of "Boris" and more of Johnson as he becomes more unpopular - maybe what people decide to call him is as a reliable a barometer as any when it comes to his popularity level?
