You make a valid point about the Ukraine war getting more coverage. The thing is, whether we like it or not, we're involved.

We can't just bury our heads in the Qatar sand either. The only right, correct, moral, and ethical thing to do is say, no, we're not taking part in a tournament in the country, in a stadium built on blood, forced labour, and oppression.

On another thread, people are horrified at the death of Gary Jenkins. Quite rightly too. It's heartbreaking. That attack involved vicious homophobia. Qatar imprisons homosexual men. It's uncomfortable, isn't it? I know. I hate it. I struggle with it. The worst thing we can do is ignore it.
We are involved with the Saudi war in Yemen 🇾🇪 too ….pictures circulating from there is heartbreaking

Absolutely. It's heartbreaking. Just stick a montage of images from all these conflicts together and then top them off with pictures of the World Cup stadia in Qatar. It's sickening.

Don't worry. I won't spoil any more fantasy international football with harsh realities.

I don't think so, just giving the rationale FIFA/UEFA would probably use. I doubt Sweden are too pleased Poland got a bye

If Scotland had to play a qualifier in June and then play us they'd probably complain we'd played a glorified friendly in the NL whereas they played an intense playoff semi final. They'd probably point to the treatment Poland got as well

I think UEFA f*cked it in the first place by giving Poland a bye and not replacing Russia with someone else. Russia should have been replaced by whoever was next on the list of teams (Hungary I think) or the team who finished 3rd in Russia's group (Slovakia)

I fully get where you’re coming from and it is pretty appalling that Qatar were awarded the World Cup Finals. They are a backward country with warped values. It should never have gone there. Where do you draw the line though? There are always wars going on throughout the world. We would never play international sport if we cancelled major events because of wars and oppressive regimes.

                Nope, they’ve had their chance.

It should be whoever finished behind the Ukraine, or the next top qualifier who hasn’t played yet

Taken to it's logical conclusion, we'd end up banning all forms of entertainment and enjoyment.

I really don't know Bob. The Ukrainian people are either under siege, fighting, or displaced refugees. How can they possibly decide and who decides for them? I don't think some Escape To Victory type match fits with the reality that they've stopped 18-60-year-old men leaving the country. If the Ukrainian team is able to play, aren't they able to fight? I'm not suggesting any of this is right I'm merely pointing out just how messy this all is and whatever is attempted to salvage this WC scenario will be the wrong decision.

I loathe the MSM and the article in The Telegraph the other day was heavily weighted against Wales. I know last time I raised this it was shouted down, but I can't see how either Scotland or Wales beating Ukraine would be viewed as anything other than akin to drop-kicking a sack of puppies into a river. It's all miserable. The whole bloody thing.

Id rather Scotland, both for the occasion and also I think we know and understand them (and their mental state) better. I doubt there is much between them as sides

It’s clearly not the same, but I think the most similar thing to what the Ukrainian people are going through most of us have experienced was the first lockdown two years ago when Covid was new and Id say the view that was prevalent, especially among older people, was that if you caught it, you could well die. The cry then, and for much of the couple of years that followed, was a desire for things to return to “normal”. I’d say there’s a desire for something similar now in Ukraine and their football team (a lot of whom play abroad and would be available to play if they wanted to) competing for a place in the World Cup could be a sort of rallying cry, especially if they did well.

If Ukraine can't get a team together for their game against Scotland then Scotland should get a bye.
All this talk of putting another team in Ukraine's place, if they can't fulfill the fixture, is ludicrous. Why should a team who failed to qualify from their group be given a second chance?
