In my school, a large proportion of pupils, along with lots of parents, demanded football was on the curriculum.
This attitude of many on this board that “ my PE teacher made us play rugby, so I’m gonna grow up hating the oval ball game” sounds both comical and pathetic.
You should have stood up for yourselves when you had the chance.
We had a few discussion groups in 6th form about topics given to you by staff but don’t think us kids ever felt we had a say about school. Ours was a rugby or nothing school too. The football kids despised rugby because of this.

The Glan Afan PE teacher was an ex-Llanelli Scrum Half and thought that the only sport was rugby...and occasionally cricket.

Let me tell you & anyone who says stand up for yourself is talking bullshit
        This is the facts
I played rugby for the 1st XV in schools but loved football - you had no choice play rugby or do **** all
That was from 1977 to 1984

My high school, Glantaf (before it became a Welsh school), alternated between rugby and football each year.

Thing is fisherman, when you grow up in a 1 horse town like you did, and the most exciting thing to do was stand outside the local butchers watching the bacon slicer, it’s hard to believe there’s a big wide world out there.
Over in the big city, where there are lots of tall buildings, life was a bit more about thinking for yourselves and doing things for yourselves.
Anyone on here who attended my school (Glan Ely) between 1974 and 1980 will confirm that we had a football team, as well as a rugby and baseball team. We as pupils, along with many parents pushed for the football. Our team even went over to St Etienne to play in a mini tournament. Our rugby team even entered the Guinness book of records by scoring the longest try (distance wise) in rugby history, by continually running the ball in shifts of 6 players at a time around our all weather pitch for a whole weekend.
We even had a cricket team. I remember playing our 1st game away at Barry Boys comprehensive. They ran out all in white, where as we turned up in different coloured shirts, shorts and socks. We battered them.
Our 2 PE teachers at the time, Mr Prewitt and Mr Bartley were key elements in all of this.
As I’ve said, to all on here who harbour what appears to be a deep seated trauma of being forced to play rugby only, then either you didn’t have it in yourselves to challenge your school collectively, or their wasn’t enough of you who preferred football.
Whilst you were hankering for a football team, your Dads were probably getting pissed in the local rugby club, singing Max Boyce songs.

The total media bias for decades being the major 1.
Welsh Football was always scorned upon by Businesses in Cardiff City centre.
The demise of rugby is great to see, the crowds dropping off, the extortionate price of tickets and the regions collapsing.

Other than more $$$ for the WRU, I guess that’s what they expected. But the WRU are in danger of killing the golden goose and turning the sport in Wales into an absolute laughing stock.

I went to a Cardiff school William, the PE teacher, a mr Jeff Davies I believe played for Cardiff rfc but had to retire after he broke his shoulder or something, so we had him instead. We had some fun with him mind, we knew it was always going to be ruggers, before the lesson we’d sneak into the pe block and get into the store cupboard when we knew he wasn’t about, we’d take all the egg balls and hide them somewhere else. Just leaving the footballs. He knew it was us mind, instead of football we spent the whole hour running around the pitches as punishment. The rugby lumps were far from happy but they couldn’t catch me lol

When it came to rugby you were going to get slaughtered if you played either St. Illtyd's or Whitchurch high schools.
When it came to football, Fitzalan and Glan Ely were usually bloody good!

I know what you mean about the media coverage. It was always totally biased towards Rugby. Also, I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve had to correct English Scots and Irish folk I’ve met over the yrs who automatically presume I’m a rugby fan just because I’m Welsh.
It’s always been football for me, but as Delmbox has mentioned, I don’t enjoy seeing any Welsh National side in any sport, getting hammered.
