The more I think about the regions system, the more I think it's actually some contrived money laundering scheme.

When I played, our toughest rugby opponents were Willows and Llanedyren our toughest football opponents were Fitzalan and our toughest baseball opponents were St Illtyds, and Mostyn ( Must’ve been a Catholic thing) 😁

Bless him, must have taken him ages to write a letter of complaint to the school because he kept eating his crayons.

Over in the big city, where there are lots of tall buildings, life was a bit more about thinking for yourselves and doing things for yourselves.
Anyone on here who attended my school (Glan Ely) between 1974 and 1980 will confirm that we had a football team, as well as a rugby and baseball team. We as pupils, along with many parents pushed for the football. Our team even went over to St Etienne to play in a mini tournament. Our rugby team even entered the Guinness book of records by scoring the longest try (distance wise) in rugby history, by continually running the ball in shifts of 6 players at a time around our all weather pitch for a whole weekend.
We even had a cricket team. I remember playing our 1st game away at Barry Boys comprehensive. They ran out all in white, where as we turned up in different coloured shirts, shorts and socks. We battered them.
Our 2 PE teachers at the time, Mr Prewitt and Mr Bartley were key elements in all of this.
As I’ve said, to all on here who harbour what appears to be a deep seated trauma of being forced to play rugby only, then either you didn’t have it in yourselves to challenge your school collectively, or their wasn’t enough of you who preferred football.
Whilst you were hankering for a football team, your Dads were probably getting pissed in the local rugby club, singing Max Boyce songs.
What a lovely, sweet story. All bollocks, but sweet nonetheless.

Without wanting to sound patronising, Glan Ely wouldn't get rugby fixtures against the likes of St Illtyd's or Whitchurch, certainly not their 1st XV.
We (Glantaf) played Whitchurch 2nds, but didn't have any fixtures against St. Illtyd's
The non-Catholic schools seemed to be better at football and baseball.

We only ever played St Illtyd”s in Baseball. They were pretty decent from memory.

                  Re: LOL at the egg….

At Lady Mary the rugby teams had new kit every year, us football plebs played in rags, all shades of washed out blue, holes in the jerseys, we were like the ragged arse rovers. We shared the u/15s Seager Cup with Fitzalan, a 1-1 draw at what is now Cardiff Met. Brian Attley got their goal, a 25 yard screamer, our goal trickled over the line barely reached the net (a net??? It was a different world having nets in those days)
The next morning assembly when, amongst the news of the day and prayers, the recent sports results were always read out. Rugby results first and various ‘Well dones, Excellent etc accompanying them, then the cross country results and then, a more or less, Oh the u/15s soccer team shared the Seager Cup as well. Us football boys thought we’d top the bill that morning, to us it was the FA Cup Final of Cardiff Schools football, we were treated like the shit on their shoe. I will say though that being second class citizens certainly made us a more determined bunch.
                  .

Exactly the same for me at Cardiff High in the mid to late 1970. (and when we did manage to get the teachers to let us play football in the 6th form we had a decent team. How many what-ifs are there throughout Wales)

I have loathed the egg ever since. Seeing the WRU in complete disarray is hilarious.

You do realise you had voices back in the day? If you just sat back and accepted it, then you have nobody to blame but yourselves.
In my school, a large proportion of pupils, along with lots of parents, demanded football was on the curriculum.
This attitude of many on this board that “ my PE teacher made us play rugby, so I’m gonna grow up hating the oval ball game” sounds both comical and pathetic.
You should have stood up for yourselves when you had the chance.
What an utterly stupid post. Don’t you think it just a bit strange that so many people experienced the same sort of discrimination against boys interested in playing football? Laughably deluded.

Where did you go to school? Elton? Harrow?

What a joke of a post.

I meant we never played St Illtyd’s in anything else other than Baseball. Hope that clears that bit up for you.

Typical daft reply from you. If you and your school mates never had the balls to stand up for yourselves back then, then that’s your problem.
I’d also seek psychological assistance if I were you and you’re still traumatised over a PE teacher.

Standing up and challenging authority in Lady Mary during my years there would have meant being physically assaulted by one teacher in particular. 12 & 13 year old boys standing up for themselves against 40 odd year old bullies? Never going to happen.

Yeah we did u numpty, we refused to play rugby most weeks and formed our own football team. Is that enough? Obviously you and your unruly mob just made the teachers an offer they couldn’t refuse…..
