I know you like defending right wing politicians which is a sort of clear clue to your bias but it's often said the USA democrat party is like the tory party here .........and the republicans is further right , the home of dirty big business , crazy libertarians , redneck racists and religious freaks

I mean I look at the latest convention and the interviews with republicans and they make reform look moderate

Absolutely potty the lot of them

You just casually label millions of people as bible backing rednecks, lining up for McDonald's, crazy libertarians, racists and religious freaks and then position yourself as the moderate even though youve just said the most extreme of things!

          That's because they are

Trump is a nutcase and a very dangerous serous man and these people are voting for him in their millions

Would you vote for a person who was as dislikeable and divisive as he was unless you agreed with what he said ?

You are doing as much as you are defending the lunatic with worrying abandon

Well if you say they are, then I guess they must be.

As I say, in reality you most definitely do not sound like the moderate one here.

Well either all these press interviews of republicans on the street , you tube stuff , high ranking republican campaign coordinators storming out of bbc interviews after being confronted about right wing policies , fundraising events at churches for republican politicians and mass rallies of foaming mouthed rednecks and invasions of government buildings ........are all staged and lies .....probably by those commie Democrats

Or the republicans really are a swamp of steaming lunatics

Unbelievable isn't it. More like a cult than a political party . I bet him and pence wish they'd kept their self respect and dignity now. Changing course and fawning to him and his supporters hasn't done them any favours.

I do wonder if even Trump has to be careful with what he's created now. Do they completely idolise him as it seems, or do they just see him as the vessel with which to enact their radical agenda. Highly unlikely Trump would ever show moderation but I'd be interested to see his supporters reaction if he did. Would they follow him , or turn on him as a RINO

                    Re: The Grand Old Party.

I don't know if anyone else feels the same but I can't help forming parallels with what went on at that Milwaukee rally last night with those infamous Nazi rallies in Munich in the 1930's. The same fanatical adoration, the common regalia*, the outstretched arms towards the podium, the "fight, fight, fight" chants - frightening stuff.

As others on the MB have stated, I also cannot believe that women are Trump supporters and some Christians too. The man is so clearly a narcissist with no real empathy for other people. I'm just grateful that I don't live in the U.S.A. with its completely polarised society where one half appears to hate the other half. Frightening.

*Even the ear bandages decorated with the star spangled banner!

                      Trump isn't interested in God

But he is now because he knows that the Christian vote in America is absolutely huge

And they are almost all republicans

                      Right wing republicans

There is a large right wing Christian vote in the UK too for the conservatives

                      I think it's creepy

But they haven't always been quite this bad have they ? The original post appears to be suggesting that the party has changed for the worse, that's an idea that I'd most certainly agree with myself

Ffs. Now you are saying almost all Christians are republicans.

Seriously, these observations of the US electorate are as bigoted as they are false. Millions upon millions of Christians vote Democrat.

Of those that attend church regularly it was 59-40 in favour of Trump. Of those who go less often it's the other way.

And you don't have to attend church to be Christian.

So you are a few tens of millions out with that stereotype of yours.

Jimbo + Sludge, I suspect both of you haven't spent much time among Republicans actually in the US. I don't think either of you really has any on-the-ground understanding of what is actually happening here.

IMHO, Sludge's characterization is unfortunately closer to the truth than is in any way comfortable. Trump has the support of a diverse coalition: religious fundamentalists, venal business leviathans, grifting chancers and (the plainly stupid) cult fodder. No rational, honest person could conceive of voting for him yet I suspect he will win handily in November. So, let's put those facts together - inevitably it leads to the conclusion that Sludge's somewhat too strident summary of MAGA folks is about right. (And my own casual empiricism confirms this because I have actually tried many times to engage with them.)
