Re: New Party on the Left
Sultana impresses again.
The difference between her and Corbyn - her willingness to stand her ground and come out fighting - is stark.

Wow! That's powerful and impressive! She's exactly what's needed to fight back against right wing propaganda. She inspires me!Originally posted by jon1959 View PostSultana impresses again.

I'm not entirely sure that reopening the antisemitism can of worms is the wisest of actions is it?Originally posted by jon1959 View PostSultana impresses again.

Now is exactly the right time to be clear about what is anti semitism and what isn't.Originally posted by JamesWales View PostI'm not entirely sure that reopening the antisemitism can of worms is the wisest of actions is it?
We have a legacy of more than 10 years of western governments and institutions (reflected in the press) adopting (against the warnings of its main author) mis-applying the IHRA definition of anti semitism that conflates criticism of the Israeli government and its state ideology with hatred of Jewish people.
Anti semitism is racism is vile.
Opposition to a racist, genocidal state, with a government that harbours fascists, and directs a nuclear armed military to commit mass murder against civilians is a moral responsibility.
Netanyahu, backed by the Trump regime, happily calls all his political opponents (including leaders of western governments) anti semites. He has no confusion about it. The IHRA was his big victory - as international recognition of ethnic cleansing and war crimes was his defeat. The only 'can of worms' is the one that allows opposition to genocide to be silenced with the label of anti semitism - and that is often directed at Jewish opponents as much as non-Jewish.
The legacy of Corbyn's retreating and apologising in the face of a dishonest campaign against Labour when he was leader - from the Israel lobby, the liberal as well as Tory press, and from the Labour right who controlled the party for most of his time as leader - was catastrophic. If Sultana is able and willing to clean up the mess he left, then good on her.

Clearly screwing up any chance of defeating farage and reform
The best way to deal with this huge threat is for corbyn to hold back and Labour to grow some balls and force starmer out together with his shocking cabinet
Only then could a more centrist labour get enough support to edge past reform and keep farage out with a coalition
Whilst starmer and his crew are the elephant in the room corbyn is outside the door with a knife
He will be intensely disliked by moderates if he pushes forward with this and hands the keys to farage

Re: New Party on the Left
“Labour is dead” after failing to deliver for working people, Zarah Sultana said as she urged supporters of a new leftwing party she is creating with Jeremy Corbyn to be patient and “watch this space”.
Sultana, the independent MP for Coventry South who quit Labour after losing the whip for backing a move to scrap the two-child benefit cap, is co-leader of a nascent party with Jeremy Corbyn.
She was speaking at the weekend in Newcastle at the conference of a separate but like-minded leftwing party founded by the former Labour North of Tyne mayor, Jamie Driscoll, who quit the party when he has blocked from standing as its candidate in the north-east mayoralty election.
It was a packed house of about 300 people in the Great Hall meeting room of Newcastle’s Discovery Museum. The gathering shines a light on how Labour has to look over its left shoulder, as much as its right, as it navigates the changing political landscape with confidence in established, mainstream parties on the decline.
Sultana said more than 750,000 people had registered their interest in the new party but acknowledged frustration at how long it was taking to get it formally launched. In lieu of an agreed name it is being called “Your party” and no date for a promised “mid-autumn” conference has been announced.
“Watch this space,” Sultana told the Guardian. “I am just as desperate to get this going but it will take time to make sure democracy is at the heart of it. It needs to be reflective of the movement, it can’t just be MP-led.”

Now there appear to be 4 or 5 parties shuffling for power its ear candy to farage to see his main opposition crumble
Theres a chance that the removal of starmer may give labour enough support to again be the leading party ......farage being exposed and a new leader could easily change things
But this new left is cloud cuckoo land and even it only shaves off 5 points off Labour's vote farage will walk through the doors to power without having to raise one of his fake smiles
But I suppose corbyn and sultana and the rest of the labour party arguing like kids over sweets will be at least entertaining but its all it will be ......talk about egos over policy

She's just as useless as Starmer; they are making it so easy for Farage.Originally posted by the other bob wilson View PostI think Badenoch comes over as prissy and generally ineffective, but I agree she got the better of Starmer today and that line you quote was the highlight of a largely forgettable exchange.

Re: New Party on the Left
It will be interesting to see what the actual membership is.Originally posted by jon1959 View Post
If we take Reforms membership tracker as gospel they are currently gaining members at about 10,000 per month.
They actually dipped 10,000 to around 227,000 in July which gave the website Left Foot Forward great joy.
Unfortunately the reason I saw given somewhere that Reforms auto renewal system was not working properly may have been true as today Reforms tracker says they have well over 247,000 members ( this figure is in fact about 15,000 more than mid august).
I suspect that the new party's initial take up will be a good deal higher than this, but what that would mean in terms of seats in a General Election I have no idea.
After all,Labour had far more members in 2019 than the Tories and lost by 80 seats! Hi

And why do they feel that way?Originally posted by Dorcus View PostI think you're absolutely right with your last sentence.
If you talk to youngsters these days they are very well informed on most things. Politics, environment, gender stuff.
I spoke to one and they said that they won't vote because it doesn't matter who you vote for nothing really changes.I was a bit shocked.
People have fought fought right to vote. But that's how many feel.
