Educate me. What does it achieve?

Should we pull down statues of every Roman up to Constantine?

Would you have left the statues of Stalin, Lenin, etc to stay up after the Berlin Wall fell?

Perhaps leaving them in place and adding what they did in detail and how that reflects on people would be far better educational , eradication of history seems counter productive, unless statue removal is more political than about black lives

It’s quite likely that some folk can trace their ancestry back to those slave traders so have a direct connection, the reason why they are living where they are today, the treatment that their forebears suffered is pretty accurate etc compared to Roman Empire times.

Those statues were a direct reminder of the oppression many still alive suffered at the hands of the regimes created by the communists.

Slavery has never been legal in the UK. There was a famous case in the 1770s that stated slavery was incompatible with English law. Say what you want about the anglo-saxons, but they eliminated the romano-British practice of slavery in the 5th and 6th century.

So whereas the likes of Stalin were detested by those who suffered under his regime, what exactly are we looking to achieve by pulling down a statue of a man who most have never even heard of and at the same time has no bearing on anyone alive today?

Yes , and explain via a plaque on the statue what they did which was not right , surely education of events has a purpose and delivers a strong message of how peoples decisions and messages hurt others .

Do people learn their history from seeing a statue in the street? Why not just stick them is a museum and replace them with a statue of someone from history who didn't own slaves?

Exactly, would you want statutes of convicted paedophiles to remain? I'd like to wipe off any shred of racism from the planet. Teach kids the history but as a black man or woman, having to walk passed statues of slave traders wouldn't exactly me feel welcome in the UK 😏🙄

What's the point of having a statue up of them then?

A statue is for glorification not for teaching people about history is it?

No slaves came into the UK. The slave trade took bills of exchange from Bristol, Southampton and Liverpool to West Africa, which in turn took slaves to the Americas, which in turn sent raw materials back to the UK.

Slavery has never been legal in the UK, not since the time of Vortigern.

                          Colston didn't own slaves.

But the statues are of slave traders who traded black people, does it matter where they did it?

He traded slaves did he not?

Seems like the weirdest defence ever. He only sold children to the pedos he didn't bum them himself!

We all would, but pulling down statues doesn't erase history.

I bet most people walking past Colston had no idea who he was.
