Not relevant, no matter how much you like to think it is.

I agree with most of what 'Feedback' says. A google search tells me that the Colston's statue was erected because of his philanthropic works in Bristol, the city of his birth. His career as a merchant was spent mostly in London. The world was a very different place then. Renaming buildings and removing statues achieves what?? Nothing to you as you don't live in Bristol.

Bristol was a city largely built on slave trade, if you want to make a point can I suggest that you lobby Cardiff City to not play any more football matches against Bristol City because of its offensive association with the slave trade. Or maybe you, personally, might wish to never attend such matches again.

Cardiff, of course, was built on coal. We now know it's one of the biggest polluters on our planet. The damage it's done to peoples' health is well documented. Children were sent underground to dig for coal in the most awful conditions. Let's get rid of statues of the Bute family for their involvement in building our docks which enabled Cardiff to be the biggest exporter of this polluting compound in the world

It's history, we learn and we move on.

If I want to make a point about Feedback overreaching his hyperbole by guaranteeing that there was no hint of support of slavery when the Colston statue was erected I should lobby Cardiff City to not play any more football matches against Bristol City because of its offensive association with the slave trade. Fair play I have read some nonsense on this board over the years but your post is right up there.

Don't be so dramatic, unless it's designed to look exactly like Colston himself then a name change should suffice in that case

It looks nothing like Edward Colston any more. Job done!

Far too much hassle. Just rename it. Piece of piss.

It annoys racists, bigots and various other twats.

With you here. It's always fun to see them creeping out of the woodwork when issues like this arise.

Funnily enough, a few years I was on the Isle of Bute and went to Mount Stuart house - a luxury mansion worth hundreds of millions amazingly crafted by some of the best tradesmen around the world. During the guided tour the punters were in awe of so much of the building. I left and hated the experience. Much of the wealth that had gone into building such a palace was from the blood of so many Welshmen.

No doubts that Wales benefitted from the Marquis of Bute and his money, but I couldn't help but feel deeply saddened by the stain on that money.

Can I just say that racism of whatever form is a shitshow

But white people can be offended and feel uncomfortable about racism

And white people who go on demos or marches or pull down statues may be sometimes going about it the wrong way but they ain't hiding behind their computer screens doing naff all about it

Almost all of them are not trendy lefties or woke or snowflakes

Sometimes you have to stand up against something you believe is wrong

Up at Scarborough in 1993 I saw two so called cardiff fans spit in the faces of two black Scarborough players warming up . It was disgraceful so I gave a copper in our end a description of the twats and ten minutes later they were nicked . I was shitting myself but it had to be done .

In 2003 in our first home game against Bradford several idiots on the Bob Bank were giving nazi salutes to the Bradford fans , a black girl was close to us and she looked very anxious . I spotted Jeff Richards the ex football liason copper who was then a steward and after pointing them out a group of coppers moved in and off they were taken . You shit yourself when you are dealing with racist thugs but my point is you can either argue the toss on here or do something about it like take the knee or join a march or challenge racism if you see or hear it in life . You can only do your best but for some confrontation or direct action is too much . That's cool , we are all different but don't waste your time with historical bollocks and meaningless debate .

If you can do it , hit it head on

Well is doesn't top what you said earlier. Why on earth would a city like Bristol want to erect a statue to honour a man for his role, all be it indirect, in slavery. They did it because of his philanthropic role in the city. And I suggested that if you feel so strongly about it you may wish to take some positive action instead of playing armchair politics.
