Well I can't think of one particularly because they hold heinous beliefs but some are not so awful as others. I definitely can't think of one policy which has helped the country but I can think of many which helped a select few become obscenely rich. I wasn't sure if this was a wind-up or not but I will take the risk of receiving a "whoosh" and respond. Jesus was physically around in Israel around 2000 years ago, so at that time AIUI, most Jews would have been there rather than being scattered around the world. The Romans had conquered Israel and were an army of occupation during Jesus's time. At that time Israel as we know it today was split into two provinces: Israel and Judah, Israel being in the north and Judah in the south. Jerusalem was in Judah and the Roman governor there at that time was Pontius Pilate. Most of the places mentioned in the gospels are situated in Judah.

The Jews detested the Romans because they were occupiers and they had to pay taxes to them. They also ruled with an iron fist. The Jews were praying that someone would come along, start an uprising and get rid of them. Jesus' message of peace and "love thy neighbour" did not go down very well and ultimately he was crucified (a cruel method of execution used by the Romans) though this had more to do with the ruling religious elite than the Romans. Too much to elaborate further here!

Although some Jews started emigrating quite early on to different parts of the Roman empire it was more than a thousand years later that the Jewish population started emigrating on a big scale to Europe and only in last 100 years they started returning to Israel en masse which is the underlying cause of the present situation.
