  • Re: The Bluebirds Academy and DVP thread...

Goals from Jake Davies, Kaba, Papirnyk and Barton have City 4-1 up in the dying minutes against Colchester.

Nice to see Josh Beecher, who is something of a forgotten man at City this season, lay on the last two goals with lovely crosses.

    Finished 4-1.

Paul, Any idea where the striker Harry James signed from Spurs is ?. My brother in law works for Spurs and he is none the wiser!

No, not heard anything about him since the day we signed him - can only assume he’s injured.

A bit of an end of season type feel to things. No first team spots to fight for now and some quality players have moved on, it all felt a bit flat. Some sloppy play today, passes going astray and nothing really flowed. We got counter attacked time after time and were lucky they weren't clinical in the last third.

Still positives though. I only got down for the second half so didn't see much of Isaac Davies but I got the comparison with Robertson that the commentators were making in the first half. Long way to go yet though, of course.

Barton and Beecher were effective subs, nice to see Papirnyk come on and score too. He didn't look fazed at all. Jake Davies put in a shift as always on top of a goal and a good ball across for the second after some nice play from Trey George.

          Swansea on Friday now.

Jacks go 1-0 up in awful conditions with puddles forming on the pitch.

All pretty comfortable for the jacks at half time. It’s still 1-0, but Swansea have taken charge in thr minutes leading up to half time. We’ve looked lightweight in attack, but to be fair to our forwards, the service into them has been poor and so the Swansea defence has barely been tested.

Yes, the conditions have been difficult, but this is perhaps the most boring game I’ve seen a City side play this season. Swansea should be more than one up, but they’ve been pretty ordinary, yet that’s all they’ve needed to be against a City side completely lacking in creativity and presence Im attacking areas.

Think Debono’s had a good game, but no one else in blue has taken my eye.

                  Finished 1-0 to Swansea.

Yes, very poor. No spark there at all. A couple of worrying things for me.

Dan Ola is really struggling to find any form at all, even though he's been back from injury for a few months now. Of course, if the side aren't playing well then the striker won't be being getting much service but it feels like more than that to me. We tried pushing Tankiewicz and even Apter up alongside him at times to give him some support but it didn't make any difference. I'm sure he'll come good but it's taking time.

Also, that's not the first time this season I've seen Mannie Barton completely disappear from a game. It feels like all or nothing with him. It's not going to be his game on the ball every time, just like any winger, but he needs to find other ways to contribute. Jake Davies is a good example for him, always battling away and trying to make things happen.

Talking of Davies, what did you make of the incident when he was claiming a penalty in the second half? It looked to me like he'd got ahead of the defenders, if it wasn't a foul that brought him down then I couldn't see what else it could've been.

Not that we deserved anything. Poor game in terrible conditions (incredible that it lasted the 90 minutes, it was biblical down there) and we were very much second best.

Regarding Ola, I cut him a bit of slack because he’s returned after a long time out injured into a level that he’s barely played at before.

I agree with you about Barton, he’s gone backwards at under 21 level from last season and contributed barely anything last night - I still hear and read people calling for him to be included in the first team squad occasionally, but he’s miles away from that on this season’s evidence despite having done pretty well in the matches I’ve seen him play for Wales at age group level in 25/26.

Regarding the penalty claim, I’m with the commentators (another thank you to John Donovan for mentioning the blog again - I think he realises I was joking when I mentioned him getting the TOBW name wrong the first time around!), who talked about it for some time and, essentially, concluded that it could have gone either way - maybe the referee, who I thought gave just about the best performance on the pitch last night, was influenced by the conditions, but it was in the “I’ve seen them given” category although it’s harder for me to get worked up about it when my team has played so badly that it would have been a travesty if they’d scored from it to secure a draw.

No news of the score yet in the under 18s’ match at Brentford this lunchtime, but an interesting name on the bench for them today

From sub against Chelsea to sub against Brentford youth - he must have been injured these last few weeks.

Yes, I have been too, but how much slack are we cutting him? It dawned on me last night that he started the Arsenal game on November 11th and I'd seen him coming on the week before that. That's nearly four months now. It can't be a fitness issue, there was no cover on the bench last night so it must've been the plan from the start to play him the 90 minutes. And that's after he played 77 minutes on Tuesday.

It feels like he's causing a bit of a log jam. If the plan was to get him up to speed then send him out on loan to the Welsh League or somewhere to give Jack Sykes some exposure at u-21 level then it's not happening any time soon from what I've seen. And I've have thought Sykes' presence for the u-18s is denying Papirnyk pitch time at that level, although I see they both started today.
