Re: Attendances holding up well
I’m getting that impression, he threw his toys out of his pram again simply because I asked in a previous post if he was wired differently. I didn’t even need to ask as it’s as obvious as night and day. He’s fantastic entertainment thoughOriginally posted by North Cardiff Blue View PostHe's pedantic and argumentative, that's in his nature.

Re: Attendances holding up well
OK, as promised, the following are the Ninian Park attendances for the eleven Cardiff v Swansea matches in the Football League from the clubs’ first meeting in 1929 until they went their separate ways for a while in 1965.Originally posted by Rock_Flock_of_Five View PostI must admit to being surprised that a game against Swansea would perhaps be the highest attended league game at Ninian Park.
I know an intense rivalry developed since the early 80s (Toshack's reign as manager), but I didn't think there would be enough interest back then against Swansea Town.
The figures in brackets are City’s average attendances for each season and the games marked with an asterisk are those where the Swansea clash drew Cardiff’s biggest Football League crowd of the campaign:
1929/30 (Second Division): 29,093 (12,944) *
1930/31 (Second Division): 24,232 (8,297) *
1949/50 (Second Division): 60,855 (28,680) *
1950/51 (Second Division): 41,074 (28,412) *
1951/52 (Second Division): 46,003 (28,945) *
1957/58 (Second Division): 42,482 (15,845) *
1958/59 (Second Division): 24,450 (17,776)
1959/60 (Second Division): 34,881 (24,183)
1962/63 (Second Division): 23,454 (15,567)
1963/64 (Second Division): 21,417 (13,782)
1964/65 (Second Division): 15,896 (10,588)
1951/52 was interesting. Swansea Town played Cardiff City at the Vetch Field on Christmas Day (a 1-1 draw), and at Ninian Park on Boxing Day (3-0 to City). Cardiff eventually finished second and were promoted to the First Division.

I had no idea the SW derby was such a big deal back then. As much as following the City has been a big part of my life, I'm not sure I'd have the appetite to watch them on Christmas Day, as well as Boxing Day.
It goes back to an earlier thread, whereby some suggested the players were playing too many games (with the inclusion of cup games); back-to-back games anyone? :hehe:

I’ve convinced myself that I watched back to back games once , I’m probably wrong but I thought we’d played on an Easter Monday and then the next night??
I’d be interested to know when was the last time we played in consecutive days?

Boxing day this year will be the 50th anniversary of my 1st ever away game, Swindon away 26/12/1975, we lost 4-0.Originally posted by olderblue View PostI’ve convinced myself that I watched back to back games once , I’m probably wrong but I thought we’d played on an Easter Monday and then the next night??

I'm sure we played Peterborough at home the next day and won 5-3 ?
I'll have to check the record.

I would have probably attended both of these games...
26/12/1980 - Bristol City 0 Cardiff 0
27/12/1980 - Cardiff 3 Swansea 3
I can't say I was definitely at the Bristol away fixture, although I was 19 and attended a lot of away games at that time. Ashton Gate being a league fixture I would seldom miss. Of course, Swansea at home was a given.
I had it in my head that back-to-back games were from a bygone era, seems I might have attended one or two myself.
Edit: I suppose 45 years ago IS a bygone era! :hehe:
