Agree! However, a few uplifting circumstances. The massive anti fascist counter protests and the (admittedly early) signs tough sentences deter the riff raff. Still a long way to go but green shoots and all that. I'm sure you'd agree the bigger challenge is destroying the agent provocateurs. It will take time but I'm optimistic we will clip their wings.

I think we would agree that social media has changed how we all interact and how we get our news and views and has contributed significantly to society having more polarized views.

Yes it's a problem and there has been a massive spin-off group that thinks everything is a conspiracy theory, the Covid vaccine lot have moved on but still all speak together in crazy WhatsApp groups, and believe whatever they read.

Maybe he does. But I am just agreeing with the guy in the interview that there are underlying issues and that this was sparked by Southport but it wasn't the core cause of it all.

I would say the same about the London riots in 2011. Not everyone rioting then did so because they felt sympathy for Mark Duggan. You would no doubt say the same about BLM riots in america a few years ago (I am talking specifically about riots not the Peaceful protests that greatly outnumbered them).

Theres a host of underlying issues that are susceptible to sparks to expose them.

These things don't happen in isolation. There is no justification for them and I would throw the book at them harder than many would, but that doesn't mean there are never causes, reasons, however unjustified as a reason for violence they may be

I found the discussion about the riots here very interesting, especially at the start where the woman talks about the sort of people who get into these far right conspiracy theories and how such thinking flourished during Covid.

That's the problem isn't it, James is associating his (and a lot of ordinary people's) views on immigration to these people out on the streets.

The mainstream view on migration is that it's too high and needs to benefit the country. The issue with associating these riots with discontent around the level of immigration is that it's pretty clear the two things don't align. The ordinary person wants a system that makes sense and isn't overloaded, the people on the street want 0 immigration and everybody to be white.

I think the mega wealthy should be taxed more, if some group was out on the streets rampaging through the posh bits of London attacking people who looked rich, I wouldn't say 'well you should have addressed the underlying cause, perceived inequality'.
