I had. Do you honestly think I would have set up a thread after the 2011 riots with a title such as this?

All very true if one wishes to be pedantic but of course there were two fundamental links to the violence. For tonight's star prize can you identify them? By the way you get half a point if you only get one but you miss out on free cancellation of your UnHerd and Guido accounts!

Two fundamental links to violence generally or to the post Southport riots?

No subscriptions needed - they are free. You should give them a go as part of a balanced diet, especially unherd which is often thought provoking.

I'm talking about the Southport riots and the subsequent fascist riots throughout the country. Not others.

The poor standard and biased nature of reporting at UnHerd would not allow this to be revealed to it's readership but the two fundamental links to the chaos are:

          A) Right wing populists promoting the myth about immigration problems in an effort to stoke up tension and disruption, notably with megaphone tactics.

          B) Those provoked into subsequent action emanating exclusively from the lowest demographic in terms of intellectual capacity, education, social status, moral persuasion and societal engagement.

Tim Montgomerie would be apoplectic if he caught any of his staff promoting the truth.

If the Unherd article analysis that the rioters could fit into a variety of different types is not to your taste and that in fact they were a homogeneous group of fascists (in your words) can you point to a better article that demonstrates that?

I'm not sure what you think the article is bias towards? The truth perhaps? The social sciences? I'm not sure.

            On your other points;

            A) You have to consider that it isn't a myth and that very high levels of immigration does come with costs (as well as benefits) and that these arent equally distributed

            B) Probably the most classist and snobby thing I've read on here, although it is true that those involved in the riots would be disproportionately working class.

If you had actually been on the site, which you plainly haven't, you have just labeled it in your own binary way as "not left wing" then you would see there is a wide range of diverse articles that challenge a few narratives.

                  https://unherd.com

I can see why you wouldn't like it.

Geezers, scallies and losers....erudite and perceptive analysis. The lowest demographic in terms of intellectual capacity, education, social status, moral persuasion and societal engagement....classist and snobby.

That's what I call holding a consistent narrative!

Yes but the difference is that the article presents that as one type of rioter..and expands upon it greatly. Whereas Ducky doesn't. That's the sum of his analysis.

What do you think? Each and every person caught up in the riots came from an identical background and and with the same motivation? Or not?

Love the binary question from the man of self proclaimed nuance.

I think I said earlier that in my opinion the location and timing of the protests was arranged on line by people fanning the flames and the major proportion of those attending did so as a result of social media or word of mouth because they believed in the justification of their actions.

Undoubtedy others rushed to the sound of conflict and others fell out of pubs but you seem to think that this somehow diminishes the central threat of EDL mobs torching and threatening anything that they perceived as foreign and alien. It's not some great kind of get out explainer that some ocassional journalist who seems at home interpreting Tommy Robinson's plans thinks it is by creating trite groupings and trying to give them equal importance and equivalence.

It wasn't a binary question. It was an option of one type of rioter versus a great diversity of which there are many interpretations, and you gave yours..which I am far closer to than the views of many on here.

I don't think anything diminishes anything. There was a truly horrific element to it. I'm just interested in understanding it and (like us all) trying to make it not happen in future.

I don't think Tommy Robinson has been summoned and I believe the EDL hasn't existed for a decade or so btw..which does rather suggest that the narrative that has been put out is not as accurate as it could be.

I didn't say Robinson had been summoned, I said that the journalist you quoted also recently wrote an apologia Unherd article interpreting his plans as something out of the Progressives playbook.

I will take your word on recent right wing history.
